Root canal treatment is used when the tooth nerve (pulp) is inflamed or dead. The goal of treatment is to preserve the tooth rather than simply remove, fall out, or replace it. During the treatment, the pulp tissue is removed, the root canal is expanded and the surrounding infected tissue is removed by filing. The root canal is then filled again. In some cases, pulp tissue can be healed and preserved through regenerative endodontics.
During root canal treatment, we take care of the inside of the tooth. Bacterial infestation of the soft tissue inside the tooth caused by tooth decay can not only cause inflammation but also severe pain in the tooth.
What symptoms indicate endodontics?
The most common symptom is very sensitive teeth with severe, pulsating or throbbing pain, especially with overreaction of the teeth to cold or hot foods and drinks.
How is endodontics treated?
We carefully proceed in three steps when treating your root canals
Drilling the dental crown
If possible, a small opening is drilled into the crown of the tooth. In this way, diseased or dead tooth pulp can be removed and the nerve cavity, the so-called pulp chamber, can be cleaned.
Filling in the medication
Before a plastic sealing material is placed in the cavity as a root filling, a special medicinal insert can be inserted into the tooth over several sessions to enhance the cleaning effect. The access is then temporarily closed.
Closing and crowning the opening
If the treatment is successful, the access to the tooth crown is finally closed in a stable and bacteria-tight manner with a filling material and, in special cases, anchored with a root post. Finally the tooth can be rebuilt and crowned.
