Botox against bruxism – modern help for teeth grinding
Many people suffer from nighttime teeth grinding or clenching. This condition, known as bruxism, not only leads to painful chewing muscles but also to headaches, neck tension, and, in the long term, damage to teeth and fillings.
In our dental practice at Nordbahnhof, we offer you not only classic methods such as bite splints but also the option of gentle treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox).
How does Botox work for bruxism?
Botulinum toxin is injected into the masseter muscle. The medication relaxes the muscle specifically without completely blocking chewing.
-
Muscle activity decreases, and grinding and clenching are significantly reduced.
-
The effect usually occurs after a few days and lasts for 3 to 6 months.
-
A repeat treatment may be necessary – the intervals between treatments often become longer because the muscle “adjusts.”

Benefits of the Botox treatment
-
Relaxation for jaw and muscles
-
Protection against tooth loss and filling fractures
-
Less headaches and facial pain
-
Outpatient procedure without downtime
-
Often a slimmer facial shape due to reduction of the masseter muscle
What are the disadvantages or risks of Botox treatment?
As with any medical treatment, minor side effects may occur: minor bruising, pressure, or temporary muscle weakness. Very rarely, severe limitations in chewing movements occur. Because the effects of Botox are temporary, the treatment must be repeated at intervals.
Costs & Health Insurance - Botox Therapy for Bruxism
Statutory health insurance companies generally do not cover the costs of Botox treatment for bruxism. Usually, only traditional splint therapy is covered. Individual insurers may make an exception in hardship cases upon request. This requires a detailed diagnosis, documentation, and a justification for medical necessity.
Private health insurance or supplementary insurance offers significantly better chances of coverage. In these cases, we recommend submitting a written request in advance.
The price for Botox treatment for bruxism in our practice is usually between €300 and €500 per session, depending on the dosage.
Who is Botox therapy suitable for?
Botox treatment is particularly useful for patients who:
-
continue to suffer from severe grinding despite splinting
-
have severe muscle pain, tension or headaches
-
want a gentle, fast and effective addition to your current therapy
